Danger: Sharing Eye Make-Up!

[ TEXT ]

Danger: Sharing Eye Make-Up!

You need some mascara if you're going to look presentable, and you need it NOW! You want to ask a colleague if you can borrow hers, but now that you think about it, her eyes have been looking awfully pink. What REALLY happens when you share eye make-up?

Step 1:
Best Case
You borrow the mascara and your eyes look great.
Step 2:
Worst Case
Eye make-up can be a hotbed for germs, and if contaminated make-up touches your eye, watch out! This is a good way to get pinkeye or a staph infection. You can also pick up a bacterial infection, the Herpes virus or a skin disease.
Long lashes v. pinkeye. Tough choice. You have the facts, now you make the call.

How To Apply Mascara

How to apply mascara: this short video will teach you the secrets of applying the mascara the way the professional makeup artists do. Follow these steps for full and thick lashes by applying your mascara properly.

Step 1:
You will need

* Some Mascara
* A Mascara wand, this usually comes with the mascara
* Some Tissues
* Some Translucent powder
* An Eyelash brush
* Some Petroleum Jelly

Step 2:
Choose Mascara
There are many options for mascara. For most people, black will make the eyes look brighter. For people with blonde hair, black/brown or grey can work better.
Step 3:
Keep it clean
Using a little petroleum jelly and a cotton pad, you should clean your mascara wand regularly to get rid of dried clumps. It is a good idea to replace your mascara every few months to avoid the spread of bacteria.
Step 4:
Careful while moisturising
Make sure when you moisturise that absolutely none gets on the eyelashes. The most common problem with mascara is it ‘slipping' down the face which is due to oil on the lashes, usually from moisturizer.
Step 5:
Preparation
If you wish to curl your eyelashes or apply eye shadow, do this before applying mascara.
Step 6:
Apply Powder under the eye
Mascara will cling to oil or cream on the skin. To prevent the ‘panda eye' effect, apply some powder below the eye. (You might already have put on powder with your base.)
Step 7:
Load the wand
Rotate the wand around in the tube to load it with mascara.
Do not pump the wand in the tube, this will introduce air and cause it to dry out.
Step 8:
The Natural look
To give a nice light coat for day wear, you can wipe the mascara wand on a tissue, getting rid of excess before applying.
Step 9:
The upper lashes
Firstly use the mascara wand to brush the lashes from above. Then brush the lashes upwards from below. To get both sides of the lashes

As you are drawing the wand up the lashes push them back towards the lid, to give extra curl.

You can wiggle the wand at the base of the lashes, to give them a fuller appearance.

To make the most of your lashes, give a little extra mascara to the tips of the hairs, and the corners of your eyes.
Step 10:
Brush the lashes
While the mascara is wet brush the lashes through with an eyelash comb to separate the hairs.
Step 11:
Apply more coats
Only one or two coats are needed for daytime, but apply as many as you like to achieve the effect you want.
Step 12:
The lower lashes
Mascara on the lower lashes can look too heavy for the day. If you do want it, give the lower lashes a lighter coat. Experiment with only applying mascara to the edges, or the centre of the lash line to achieve different effects.
Step 13:
Wait
Try not to blink for a few seconds, so the mascara can dry.

How To Use And Apply Fake Eyelashes

Use and Apply Fake Eyelashes. Fake eyelashes can be easy to apply, and look great. This short video will show you how to apply them in a step by step guide. Learn how the professionals do it, with Videojug.

Step 1:
You will need

* A pair of fake eyelashes
* Some Eyelash glue
* Small scissors
* some Liquid eyeliner
* Tweezers
* some Mascara
* A damp cloth
* some petroleum gelly
* fake eyelash remover

Step 2:
Choose the right eyelashes
Fake eyelashes widen the eyes, can enhance the natural lashes and give a dramatic effect that could not be achieved otherwise. They are available in all colours, lengths and shapes. For a more subtle look, individual lashes or small clumps of lashes can be used. Synthetic fibres are usual, but sterilized human hairs can also be found. These are most commonly used by people who have lost their natural lashes.
Step 3:
Preparation
Apply a little translucent powder before gluing on the lashes. If you will be wearing eye shadow apply it now. Oiliness will prevent the glue sticking adequately, and eye shadow or powder will help to prevent this.
Step 4:
Trim the lashes
Fake eyelashes are made so one fits the left eye and one fits the right. Hold the lashes up to the eyes, noting which eye the lashes will be applied to. If they are longer than the eye, the width should be trimmed with a small scissors on the outer corner of the lashes. Do this BEFORE gluing them on.
Step 5:
Check the packet
Some items like glue will vary from brand to brand. For best results follow the instructions supplied with the lashes or glue.
Step 6:
Apply the glue
The easiest way to apply an even coat of glue, is to squeeze some on to the back of your hand and run the lash through the glue. Some glues will need to be left for a couple of minutes to become tacky before application to the eye. Check the tackiness with your finger before using the lash.
Step 7:
Put the lashes in position
Rest your elbow on a table to steady it in front of the mirror.

Pick up the lashes with tweezers.

It is essential that you press the lashes to the eyelid as close to your own lashes as possible, it is very difficult to mask a space between the two lines of lashes.

Single or clumps of lashes can be glued under the real lashes, to seem more natural.
Step 8:
Be Careful!
Watch carefully in the mirror as you put the lashes on to ensure that no glue gets in to your eye.

If it does, rinse the eye with cold water immediately. Make sure you know what to do for the glue that you are using, before you put on the lashes.
Step 9:
Hold
Hold the lashes in place until the glue is completely set. Again, glues will vary so check the packet.
Step 10:
Finishing Touches
Once securely in place, fake lashes can be curled, or have extra mascara applied. This is useful if the fake lashes are a different colour to your own lashes. To do this press your finger behind the fake lashes, apply mascara to your own lashes, pressing the fake and real lashes together. This binds them together.

If there is an area where the space between the fake and real lashes is obvious, fill it in with liquid eyeliner or eye shadow. Also use liquid eyeliner or eye shadow to cover any noticeable glue.
Step 11:
Taking them off
Fake lashes should always be removed before going to sleep. Some glue requires a special remover, which should be supplied with it. Most are water based, and can be removed by moistening with a damp cloth and pulling away gently.

If the lashes are proving stubborn, don't pull hard, this might remove some of your lashes too! Try some petroleum jelly, on the stubborn lashes, leave for a few seconds, and try again.
Step 12:
Storage
Once off, fake lashes can be used again. It's best to store them in their original packaging, as this will help them to retain their shape.
Step 13:
Practice, Practice, Practice
Applying fake lashes becomes easier with practice. It is a good idea to try a few times before the big night when they have to be perfect.

Mascara Master Class

Celebrity make-up artist Daniel Sandler gives you a mascara master class and shares his top tips for making the most of your eyelashes.

Step 1:
You will need

* Eyelash curlers
* Mascara
* Eyelash comb
* Make-up remover pen or a cotton bud

Step 2:
Curl your eyelashes
Curl your upper lashes before applying mascara to open up the eye. Lift your upper eyelid and look down. Position the eyelash curler close to the lash line, and squeeze for 5-6 seconds. Use metal rather than plastic curlers but don't heat them beforehand.
Step 3:
Choosing mascara
Always wear black mascara, regardless of age or skin tone. If your mascara crumbles easily, try using a waterproof mascara which will be longer lasting.
Step 4:
Applying mascara
Apply to the roots of your upper lashes and move upwards in short, jagged motions. A jumbo brush will give a more dramatic effect more quickly, but use a smaller brush if you have shorter lashes. Small brushes are also effective on bottom lashes. If you make a mistake, wipe the area with a cleanser pen or cotton bud. Comb the lashes through from root to tip to remove any lumps so the lashes separate like a petal around the eye.

How To Get The Rock Chick Look

How To Get The Rock Chick Look: Celebrity make-up artist Daniel Sandler shows you how to get the rock chick, 'just got out of bed' look. This is makeup with an attitude, so watch VideoJug's guide to doing the rock chick look and get it right.

Step 1:
You will need

* Matte grey eye shadow
* eyeliner pencil
* loose silver shimmer eye shadow
* small brush
* eyelash curlers
* black mascara
* under-eye concealer
* lip gloss
* cotton bud

Step 2:
Eye shadow
This look is 'make-up with attitude' where you can break all the rules. You don't need make-up brushes or foundation. Rub matte eye shadow across your eyelids and in the centre of your lower lash line with your fingers. Build up an uneven texture and blend with your fingers. Stand back from the mirror and stop applying the shadow once you've achieved a sultry and sexy look.
Step 3:
Eye liner
Use a soft eye pencil and draw a juddery line along the lower lashes. Add a little more to the outer edges of each eye. Draw a thicker line along the upper lashes and smudge with your finger. Add grey eye shadow on top of the black eyeliner to set the make-up. Use a soft brush to remove any bits of make-up that have fallen onto your face.
Step 4:
Shimmer
Apply shimmery eye shadow to the inner corners of your eyes below the lash line, and onto the eyelids.
Step 5:
Mascara
Curl your eyelashes before applying mascara. Use a lengthening, volumising mascara in black. Apply with the tip of the wand where there is an excess build up of mascara and apply loads of layers for a dramatic look.
Clean up any make-up below the eye that shouldn't be there and apply under-eye concealer. Finish the look off with a clear lip gloss.
