Danger: Exceeding Drug Dosage!
Your head still hurts and you want to take another pill, but you're not sure it's a good idea. You've already taken the recommended dosage. Should you push your luck? What REALLY happens when you exceed the recommended dosage of over-the-counter medication?
Step 1:
Best Case
Take another pill. You'll be fine. The recommended dosage on the label has a built-in safety margin, and there's a bit of wiggle room for you to exploit. It may even help you kick your headache.
Step 2:
Worst Case
You'll be adversely affected in both the short and long terms. Exceeding the recommended dosage can make you resistant to the medication. Then it won't work for you at all. Extended overuse can lead to an increase in side effects, including serious organ problems. In some cases, greatly exceeding the recommended dosage can result in an overdose.
At the end of the day, it's probably OK to play a little fast and loose with the directions on your drugstore pain reliever, but you probably don't want to make a habit of it. You have the facts, now you make the call.
