ehow.com - Fuel From Biomass

Ethanol, which is a biomass fuel, is usually made from corn, which is controversial to some groups; however, ethanol can be made from biomass leftover waste products. Find out how public opinion is changing towards biomass fuel in this free video from an automotive industry writer and editor.

"Hi, I'm Ron Coogan with greencar.com. Today we're going to talk about making clean fuels from biomass. You know, there's a lot of discussion today about ethanol as an alternative fuel. Most people will look at ethanol and say "It's made from corn. Corn is a food crop. It's displacing a food from the table of Americans and others, and it creates issues with availability and high cost." And in a way, that's true, because any time you're diverting a food crop for other uses, you're creating more demand, and that higher demand can drive prices up. What people largely don't understand is that ethanol will not always be created from corn and food crops. It's going to be created in other ways, from cellulosic ethanol sources. Biomass is one resource. Biomass may be the waste products from corn, corn husks, corn stover. It may be fast growing woody grasses that can provide much more material for making ethanol than corn can in the same acreage. Creating truly sustainable, renewable, biofuels starts with using resources that are not dependent on food crops. That's happening today. Breakthroughs are being made everyday. There's a huge amount of money at stake in this, there's a huge market-share involved in this. It's being followed by government, and funded by government, private industry, automakers like General Motors, many others who want to see this come to fruition. Using biomass sources like waste products from food crops like corn is important. And it's happening right now. The economics will improve as we move forward, until we get to that point where all ethanol, all biofuels are made from fully renewable resources that don't impact food or the price of food."
