"So if I want to make an eco friendly green baby nursery, what do I have to do, the most important thing obviously is the crib.

The crib, I agree, the crib is going to be your biggest investment and it's where your baby is going to spend up to sixteen hours of the day sleeping so you definitely want to make sure that it is a safe environment.

Now most cribs are made in China to be honest with you, even for US companies and European companies and they are largely made from particle board, mdf and plywood. And this is a solid wood crib and the difference between the two is that mdf particle board emits formaldehyde because really what it is, is wood scraps and they're sealed with an adhesive that's formaldehyde based and that formaldehyde is released continuously over time and from the very beginning and we inhale it, the baby inhales it. What type of wood is this? This is oak and the finish is tung oil which is a tree oil extracted without solvent and very safe, very different from polyurethane finishes that you're going to see on conventional cribs which are benzene based and have chlorine in them or the painted finishes that have the same thing, formaldehyde, tooley, pretty much known or suspected carcinogens that are regulated by...not good for our health, not good for the environment. And the cost of this green crib is pretty much relative to a non-green. It's comparable. Now let's talk about the bedding. What do we have here? This is organic cotton as well so it's bumpers. The sheets are actually natural tone but if you see, this is deliciously soft, it's so nice. So there's no pesticides, seven of the top fifteen most popular pesticides are known carcinogens. And the blanket is a hundred percent cotton, organic. Beautiful and also undyed. And the pillow here. The one you're holding is actually shredded natural latex. This particular mattress is actually organic cotton so this will probably give you the best view of what's inside your organic mattress and it's a different view than you're used to. It's not that yellow kind of polyurethane foam, the petroleum foam that you're going to be trying to avoid. This is organic cotton on top, like a sateen cotton. This is the wool which is a fair retardant, as you can see it's inside the mattress.

It's organic wool, no pesticides because a lot of the times people worry about wool and their problem is the wool is actually dipped in pesticides. They literally take the sheep and dip them in so it's not the same kind of wool you're used to if you feel it. And that little layer of wool actually satisfies the fire retardancy law so you don't need the chemicals that are applied to the surface which are, yes, there's evidence, even the consumer product safety commission admits are absorbed into baby's skin. And it's basically what was used before the petroleum explosion and the plastics explosion, it's what people used to sleep on that they always say they wished they could go back. We can go back in this and yet get the same kind of comfort without the adverse health effects. So another thing you need to put on your list for your nursery is organic moses basket and the difference between these and conventional baskets is they're made with polyurethane mattress, that's petroleum mattress and the chemicals from that off gas and actually off gas over time as the mattress degrades. So it's not just you know, you bring it in, you can let it vent. It constantly produces those vapors. So this is organic cotton and obviously not the same exposure that you would get in a conventional moses basket.

So some other things to keep in mind are what you're painting the walls with, right, if you're trying to avoid the volatile organic compounds, that's exactly what you're going to get in a standard paint. So do no VOC paint, do milk paint.

Consider what options you're putting on your flooring. Carpeting. Very often that stain guard finish is formaldehyde, it's volatile organic compounds as well. You can just pull it up and use natural hardwood floors. Exactly, that will help with allergens, and it will help with chemical exposure and it will help decrease the pollution in that room by a tremendous amount. And think about what kind of decorative features you're putting in because those curtains that don't wrinkle, they're treated with heavy chemicals that you don't want to inhale either. And also some cleaning products.

Absolutely, it's very important to make sure that the chemical content in there is, if you can make it zero, and there are products that are organic and can make it zero, then do so.

Get natural cleaning products. Exactly. Well thank you for watching and we hope that you incorporate some of these ideas on how to set up your dream, eco friendly baby nursery."
